Smoked Tri Tip Rub Recipe

Dry Rub For Smoked Tri Tip Ingredients:

Tri Tip is a special cut of beef showcasing both the properties of a steak and a roast. Adding dry rub is the perfect way to intensify its flavor. Our homemade tri-tip seasoning rub is salty, spicy, sweet, and has a hint of smokiness.

Make it for tri-tip and use it for any cut of meat. You can add or replace spices depending on your taste preferences. This dry rub for tri-tip roast is super flexible. Excited to know the ingredients? Let’s jump on details:

Brown Sugar:

Brown sugar works as a base for this dry rub. It tenderizes the meat and gives a nice crust on the surface. I used 2 tablespoons of light brown sugar in the recipe. Kosher

Kosher Salt:

Salt works as a flavor enhancer in all rub recipes. The coarse texture of kosher salt works to reach inside the tri-tip and retain moisture. Use 1 tablespoon of kosher salt.

Black Pepper:

Black pepper has a bitter taste and a strong aroma. It adds a peppery flavor to the brown sugar tri-tip rub. Use 1 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper.

Garlic Powder:

Do you love the flavor of garlic at dry rub? Garlic powder provides a pungent garlicky taste. Use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder to add depth to our dry rub recipe.

Onion Powder:

Onion powder is used in rubs and sauces to add a savory flavor. Try to use powdered onion as it doesn’t get burnt while grilling. 1 teaspoon would be enough for our homemade tri-tip rub recipe.

Smoked Paprika:

Smoked paprika adds a smoky flavor and, at the same time, gives a nice red color. It also has a hint of sweetness. I used 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika in the recipe.

Cayenne Pepper:

Want some heat in the dry rub recipe? Cayenne pepper is that heat bomb ingredient. Use 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper for heat and spice.

Chili powder:

Chili powder gives a bold chili flavor to the rub. Use mild, moderate, or hot chili powder depending on your spice preference. I used 1 teaspoon in the recipe.

Rosemary:

Rosemary has a unique aroma of its own. Use ½ teaspoon of dried and powdered rosemary to add an astringent flavor to the dry rub.

How To Make Tri-Tip Seasoning Rub?

Ever wondered what makes the smoked Tri-Tip so flavorful, and juicy inside while crunchy outside? Tri-tip rub does a wonderful job here. Today I’ll share how to make a tri-tip rub like a pro.

There are only three easy steps to crafting the best-smoked tri-tip rub. Stay tuned for step-by-step directions.

Step 1:

In a small dry bowl, combine all the ingredients after measurement. Whisk them with a fork. Even out the clumps if any.  Give it a taste and add salt, sugar, or spices if necessary. Your tri-tip rub is ready.

Step 2:

Put the tri-tip in a large dish. Spread the rub over the entire tri-tip. Press the rub very well into the steak. When the steak is completely covered on all sides, cover it with plastic wrap and keep it in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, for up to 24 hours.

Step 3:

Bring the tri-tip to room temperature. And then put it directly on the low smoker or grill. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Kosher Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon Blackpepper
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Rosemary Powder

Instructions

  • Measure and put all the ingredients in a dry bowl. Stir thoroughly with a fork until all the spices are well-mixed.
  • Even out lumps with fork or dry hands. Spread right away on tri tip, Or store in an airtight container for later use.

Notes

As brown sugar radiates some moisture with time, the rub may get clumpy. Use a fork to even out the clumps. Then use it on the tri-tip.
You can use some olive oil, mustard, or vinegar on the tri-tip before applying the rub. It’ll help the rub to stick to the meat well.
Pour it into a dry, sealed jar. Store in the pantry for up to 6 months. But I suggest using it within 2 months for better taste. This rub can also be made in advance.
Make sure to keep the rub jar away from heat. As brown sugar releases moisture in heat, the rub may degrade.
Our homemade spice rub for tri-tip roast recipe will make enough rub for about 3 pounds of tri-tip.
Don’t hesitate to put the extra rub on the tip. It’ll give you a yummy crust after grilling. I use about 3 tablespoons per side.
If you’re not a spice-lover, cut on the use of cayenne pepper. Use 1⁄2 teaspoon instead of one teaspoon.
Be patient and let the tri-tip sit in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours. This will enhance flavors and the tri-tip will melt like butter in your mouth.
Use fresh and good-quality spices for a robust flavor.
