What Is Carne Asada?
Carne asada is more of a way to cook meat than a meal itself. “Grilled meats” is what it really means. In order to make the steak taste burnt, it is usually marinated before it is cooked or seared. Most of the time, chuck steak is used, but flank or skirt steak will also work.
Carne asada can be eaten by itself or as a part of other dishes. There are a lot of people in Mexico who love this type of taco. Seasoning is often used, but there isn’t a set method that needs to be followed.
Carne Asada Seasoning Ingredients
Since this is a spice rub, you’ll need a lot of it. I like to get my spices from the bulk section of the shopping store. Whole Foods has a good bulk area, just like a lot of other stores. I like to buy a lot of these spices for this and my favorite BBQ dry rub seasoning so I always have them on hand.
Chili Powder, or paprika- 1 Tablespoon
Any pepper powder will work just fine. If necessary, you can substitute smoked paprika for this.
Mexican Oregano- 1 Tablespoon
Remember that the oregano used in Mediterranean cooking is not the same as the oregano from Mexico. It has a subtle anise undertone and tastes more like citrus and vibrant flowers. I like to use this kind of Mexican seasoning with carne asada since it has the perfect flavor profile.
Sea Salt- 1 Tablespoon
Though you can use any salt, my preference is for sea salt.
Black Pepper- 2 Teaspoons
You can use freshly ground black pepper to give it a little kick.
Onion Powder- 2 Teaspoons
Onion powder can be substituted with minced dried onion.
Garlic Powder- 2 Teaspoons
If you prefer a coarser rub, you can use crushed garlic; however, I typically use powdered garlic.
Tajin Clasico- 1 Teaspoon
Ground Cumin- 1 Teaspoon
You can toast cumin seeds and then grind them to get ground cumin. Alternatively, you might use ground parsley.
Chipotle Pepper, Optional- 1 Teaspoon
The chipotle pepper will give a little heat. If you like a softer flavor, you can use smoked paprika instead of or in addition to it.
Ground Cayenne Pepper – 1/2 Teaspoon
You can use less or not use any cayenne at all if you are concerned about the heat.
How To Make Carne Asada Seasoning?
Step 1:
You can find out how much of each spice to use on the recipe card. If you don’t like the heat, leave out the chipotle and chili pepper or use less of them.
Step 2:
Mix the spices together to make them whole.
Step 3:
Cover the spice mix with a jar and store it somewhere cool and dry.
How to Use Carne Asada Rub?
When you season carne asada, it tastes best on a good steak. First, sprinkle the steak with a lot of rub. Then, drizzle it with olive oil and use your hands to wrap it up well.
Wrap the steak in foil and put it in the fridge for up to 4 hours to make it taste better. Take the steak out of the fridge fifteen minutes before you cook it. After that, you can cook normally on the grill or stove. The rub will taste good in the meat after it’s been grilled.
You can use this carne asada rub to season other kinds of meat or even veggies. My favorite things to cook are zucchini, onions, and bell peppers. I like to sprinkle them with salt and olive oil. It works great!
