What Is Pastrami Seasoning?
The taste of Pastrami beef relies mostly on the seasoning applied to the beef. Pastrami seasoning is basically a spice blend used as a dry rub for seasoning corned beef. The main ingredients are black pepper, coriander, mustard powder, paprika, onion, and garlic powder. Pastrami rub fills corned beef with a unique spicy and smoky flavor that we all crave.
Homemade Pastrami Rub Ingredients:
You don’t need a lot of ingredients to make the pastrami rub flavorsome, use fresh and qualityful spices. Customize the rub just the way you like it by adding more or less of the spices. I provided the standard measurements here.
You know what the best part is? It is surprisingly easy to make. If you have five minutes on hand go for it. The ingredients are probably already available in your pantry. Let’s know about the ingredients in detail.
Black Pepper:
Black pepper is a common ingredient found in almost all seasonings. Apart from improving the savory flavor of beef, it helps to tenderize the beef. I used 2 tablespoons of coarse ground black pepper in the recipe.
Black peppercorns:
Peppercorns are a whole form of black pepper. Use 2 tablespoons of whole black peppercorns in the recipe.
Coriander Seeds:
Coriander seeds have a strong fragrance and citrusy taste. These are used to add flavor to several dishes. 2 tablespoons of coriander seeds.
Brown sugar:
Brown sugar tenderizes the meat and gives a nice caramel-like crust. It goes well with other spices used in pastrami rub. 2 tablespoons of brown sugar would be enough for our smoked pastrami rub recipe.
Paprika:
Ever wondered about those bright red things in your pastrami rub? Paprika adds smokiness and gives a nice color to the pastrami beef. Use 2 tablespoons of paprika in the recipe.
Garlic & Onion Powder:
Garlic and onion powder are used in sauces and seasonings to enhance the flavor. These are easily found in grocery stores. Use 1 tablespoon of both.
Mustard Powder & Mustard Seeds:
Mustard powder adds a kick in the flavor of savory recipes. I used 1 tablespoon of both for intense flavor in our pastrami rub.
Dried Thyme:
A little sprinkle of dried thyme can elevate the taste of soups, meat, stocks, furthermore it’s used in baking. ½ teaspoon of dried thyme gives our smoked pastrami seasoning a nice pungent and citrusy kick.
