Killer Hogs BBQ Rub Recipe

Killer Hogs BBQ Rub Ingredients:

Wondering what a dry rub does to your BBQ meat? Dry rub creates a crust around the meat while enhancing the flavor. Rubs are generally more coarse than the seasoning.

Worried about the list of ingredients? You’d be happy to know that I used only easily available ingredients. There are two very notable flavors in our copycat Killer Hogs BBQ seasoning recipe; chili pepper and cane sugar. Let’s know about the ingredients in detail:

Sweet paprika:

Sweet paprika is dehydrated and powdered sweet red chili pepper. It is not very spicy, but rather sweet and tart. 1 tablespoon of sweet paprika gives our BBQ rub a bright red color and intense flavors.

Chili Powder:

Chili powder adds heat and spice to any recipe. It’s typically a blend of different chili peppers. I used 2 tablespoons to make the BBQ rub hot and spicy.

Cane Sugar:

Cane sugar is white sugar that is made from sugarcane. Unrefined cane sugar contains more flavors than refined sugar. 5 tablespoons of unrefined cane sugar gives our Killer Hogs seasoning a sweet note.

Kosher Salt:

Kosher salt has a flaky texture which is good as a seasoning. It penetrates into the meat and has a tenderizing effect. 1 tablespoon would be enough for the recipe.

Cumin Powder:

Cumin powder when mixed with chili powder gives a warming and spicy flavor. Use ½ teaspoon for the dry rub recipe.

Cayenne Pepper:

Cayenne pepper is a premium quality chili pepper that is smoky and sweet. 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper makes our copycat BBQ rub spicy.

Black Pepper:

Nothing can beat a pinch of freshly ground black pepper. Can they? Use ½ teaspoon ground black pepper to intensify the flavors.

Tomato Powder:

Tomato powder is dried and powdered tomato easily found in super stores. It is sweet, tangy, and umami to taste. 1 teaspoon of tomato powder is a game changer in our homemade BBQ rub.

Garlic Powder:

Garlic powder uplifts the taste of savory recipes. 1 teaspoon of garlic powder gives our BBQ seasoning a pleasant garlicky touch.

Mustard Powder:

Mustard is a powerful earthy herb that has a complex flavor profile. Its strong pungent aroma and tanginess enhance the taste of BBQ meat. Use ½  teaspoon in the recipe.

Turmeric Powder:

Last but not least, one ingredient is turmeric powder.  ½ teaspoon of turmeric powder gives our BBQ dry rub a nice color and slightly bitter taste which complements pepper.

Notes

You can store Killer hog seasoning in an airtight jar for up to 1 month. It’ll remain usable longer than that. But I prefer using it within 1 month as spices may start losing some flavor after that.
Double or triple the ingredients if you want to make them beforehand and store them.
You may substitute cayenne pepper for chipotle. If you don’t have cayenne pepper available.
The recipe is adaptable to any spice level. Customize it with more or less salt, pepper, and sugar.
Use this Killer Hogs Spice rub on meat, pork, lamb, poultry, seafood, or veggies. The options are endless.
