Simply cut, peel, and core your apples. Place them in a large pot
Simply add water, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks, if desired, and thoroughly stir to combine all the ingredients
After bringing everything to a simmer over medium heat, cover and stew for 20 to 30 minutes on medium-low heat
Just stir it once or twice; avoid opening the lid too often, as this can cause the process to sluggish down
However, you are welcome to sometimes check in to make sure the apples aren't burning
When you pierce your apples with a fork, they should be so soft and tender that they should give up easily
Remove the pan from the stove and discard the cinnamon sticks
Simply mash, mix, or puree the apples
Simply return the applesauce to the stove if you would like it a little thicker
Let it calm down and serve
